He was first just a civil servant and became a victim of his times. Unfortunately, when the French invaded, he had to support the new government. He got a new role in the new government as chief magistrate. He worked for Pierdo Soderini who made it illegal to even say the name “Medici family”. In addition, Soderini paid a bounty for the heads of the Medici cousins. He paid a huge price for working for the other side. France could not win against the attacking When the Medici’s returned to power, they tortured him, then exiled him for the rest of his life.
Being exiled was the worse thing in his life. He drew on his experiences of use and abuse of power, and wrote The Prince, a political story about a Prince, who uses power to destroy others. His legacy is the political theory he developed during this times, where he believed that the “end justifies the means”. In other words, he believes a ruler has moral permission to do anything he wants in order to win. If that means killing thousands of people, then if the ruler gets what he wants in the end, it’s perfectly fine to kill all those people. What he is saying, “might is right”. |
Machiavelli first used his power to support the Medici's. He then misused his power, by switching sides and agreeing to order them killed.
